The Highly Sensitive Person – How to thrive when the world overwhelms you

by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D.

“According to Dr. Aron’s definition, the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) has a sensitive nervous system, is aware of subtleties in his/her surroundings, and is more easily overwhelmed when in a highly stimulating environment. “

I’ve only recently; as I’ve learnt more about myself in depth, discovered how extremely sensitive I am to caffeine, food, noise, people’s moods and the mood of my immediate environment, amongst other things.

I’ve always thought this was due to other things but I see the difference in me to the rest of my family, although I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some others in my family that are too.

On reflection over my past, I can see how over time I’ve developed strategies to cope with this; some good but some not-so-good long-term, yet helpful at the time.

This book was great in reaffirming what I’ve already discovered of myself and filling in bits I’ve missed.

Skinny Bitch

by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin.

This book is a MUST READ for everyone, world-wide, who consumes meat and dairy products, over-processed and packaged foods but especially United States citizens as it’s sources are based on their food industries.

As introduced by Oprah this book is a no-nonsense guide for readers, from the savvy modern girl to those serious about changing old habits to lose weight, shape up and becoming fitter and healthier through being aware of what you’re actually eating from animal products to food additives.

Sometimes with so much influential media flying around and ‘in your face’ you can get confused with what you ‘should and shouldn’t do’ with regards to your health. You may have heard of some or a lot of the things they will cover but in this book these girls tell you in plain language what’s what and dispell a few myths the media and food industries spin to keep you consuming their products.

You realise, like most things at this time; ‘money makes the world go round’ and most of the time your best interests are not really the what drives business in this capitolist society. Ever the optimist, I like to think this is changing, albeit at a snail’s pace.

I, myself, became a vegan immediately since reading it. While I’ve mostly kept away from dairy previously as I’m lactose intolerant, I then cut out meat too for those humanitarian reasons.

Interestingly enough, I’ve also since learnt that it is best for me to be on a vegetarian diet being the blood type that I am (I cover that in another post) .
